I'm not leaving June 1...

As some of you know, I've given myself a little research project this summer instead of getting an internship or job. I contend that the reasoning behind this is because I'm destined for a life of research, but the reason could also be that I just want to travel. Regardless, hopefully something productive will come out of this at the end of the summer and not just an empty bank account.

My project will entail traveling around the country interviewing young adults on their thoughts surrounding the American Dream of homeownership, as well as their thoughts/concerns regarding cities. I believe that there will be differences about the above from region to region, city to city. I don't want to reveal too much at this time, so stay tuned. William and I will be filming the interviews and hopefully getting some great footage of each city.  The route is basically the perimeter of the country...I know, the heartland is important but we have a constrained budget and timeline. Maybe one day I'll be able to extend the project to all 50 states. For now, we're going to make every effort to hit D.C, NYC, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Denver/Boulder, Portland, San Francisco, L.A, San Diego, somewhere in Arizona?, Austin, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Charleston. This seems like an ambitious and daunting task, but we're only spending a few days in each city. Oh, did I mention that this all depends on the hospitality of others? We need a floor to crash on in each place and have that covered for everywhere except Chicago and wherever we need to stop between San Diego and Austin. Any suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.

So, this is my summer. Hopefully my posts will be thought provoking and humorous and you'll want to follow along. We should be leaving Friday June 4. It was supposed to be today, but graduation festivities this past weekend have set us back a few days. See you in DC!

  1. Call me if you drive through the Durham area. I would love to just hug you. We are right off of I-85 and about an hour off of I-95 (boo I know). Love you so much Lizzie! Can't wait to hear about your trip!

  2. Liz, sounds like an awesome trip! You guys should go trough Flagstaff AZ. My buddy spent a lot of time there, I will ask him if he knows of any spots/homes to crash at, as long as you are cool with a bunch of hippies. Another thought: during your interviews with people you should ask them what a typical work day looks like. I am convinced that 75% of Americans simply dick around or check facebook at work most of the day. I have always though it would be a great book to write, "what American's really do at work."
