DC

We've started off our trip in the nation's capital. I guess this could be considered symbolic in some way, but I'm not feeling too profound this morning to make a proper remark on that. We drove up with William's girlfriend (Caroline) and roommate (Rob), as they both have siblings here. The ride was enjoyable. We stopped at the venerable South of the Border to find a mascot. I decided upon a giraffe and proceeded to name him Kristofferson, borrowed from The Fantastic Mr. Fox. (a must see)
Kristofferson

We also dubbed our chariot  of dreams "The Darjeeling Unlimited" after another of our favorite Wes Anderson films, The Darjeeling Limited. It seems fitting since three brothers reunite for a cross-country trek. Granted, they're on a train and traveling through India. We just like the movie, so it works. We've switched it to Unlimited since the word limited conjures up images of boundaries and this trip is boundless. Only limited by time and money, of course but who isn't?  Anyway, I'm slightly obsessed with both Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. (if you haven't seen Bored to Death, you're missing out, the area in which it's filmed is our next stop, coincidentally).

If this footage ever makes it into some sort of documentary, I picture our movie poster looking something like the above, only we'd be sitting on the Xterra and there would only be two of us and one would be a girl.
But I digress.

DC. We're staying in Glover Park which is rife with newly graduated college students trying to make it big. The neighborhood is completely walkable and the scale is great. Rowhouses, sidewalks, and tree-lined streets abound. Our first night we strolled to the local taco joint which was affordable and delicious. Oddly enough the girl at the counter graduated from College of Charleston the same year I did. Another little small world encounter: as soon as we pull into DC, stuck in downtown traffic I see a kid that was in my home room at Bishop England. I wasn't friends with him in high school so I didn't feel the need to get nostalgic and talk to him as he was waiting for his bus and we were stuck in traffic, but it's crazy all the same.

We've enjoyed our time here and got some great interviews. I was nervous prior to the interviews, but as it turns out people love talking about their neighborhood and city. I love hearing about it.

We walked the Mall yesterday and hopefully got some good footage.  Kristofferson enjoyed it.
Ann (Caroline's sister) has been a fantastic host and showed us around yesterday. We walked around Georgetown which was highly enjoyable, but also hot. Since DC was built on a swamp the humidity is comparable to Charleston. It's crazy that it can be as hot as Charleston, but get so incredibly cold in the winter.

Well, we must be moving on to New York.

Bye.
